What to pack for Australia: the season-by-season guide

The climate brief our curators use to build a Australia arrival kit.

Australia rewards preparation over improvisation. The climate data below comes straight from our relocation desk — it is the same brief we send curators before they build each arrival kit.

Summer — 24–33°C: UV is brutal — cover up, wear the shades.

Autumn — 17–26°C: The sweet spot: light layers at last.

Winter — 8–19°C: Mild; Melbourne mornings need a real knit.

Sun protection isn't a suggestion. Wide-brim hats, sunglasses and light layers that cover skin are part of daily kit here, and everything you bring should survive a beach day and a lecture in the same afternoon.

Best time to arrive: Mar–May & Sept–Nov to dodge extremes.. Whatever season you land in, the kit logic stays the same: a strong outer layer for the weather, a mid-layer you can shed indoors, and footwear built for the streets you will actually walk.
