Packing for a UK winter: the cold-weather checklist
Layering, waterproofing and the items UK students forget until January.
Winter in the UK is damp before it is cold. The reliable system is three layers: a thermal base, an insulating mid, and a waterproof shell. Skip the single giant parka; it fails on the days that matter.
Start with the feet. Waterproof boots with a real lug sole will do more for you than any coat. Add a pair of indoor slippers for dorm life and one pair of shoes that survive rain without looking like it.
Electricity is next. The UK runs on three-pin Type G sockets, so a proper adapter with surge protection is non-negotiable. Bring a power bank that clears airline rules (under 100Wh) and label it.
Finish with documents. A waterproof document wallet for your passport, CAS letter and bank letter is the single most-recommended item in every student survey we run.
