What to pack for Japan: the season-by-season guide

The climate brief our curators use to build a Japan arrival kit.

Japan rewards preparation over improvisation. The climate data below comes straight from our relocation desk — it is the same brief we send curators before they build each arrival kit.

Spring — 10–20°C: Cherry-blossom perfection; light layers rule.

Summer — 24–33°C: Humid — breathable, quick-dry fabrics help.

Winter — 1–10°C: Dry cold; a good wool layer is enough.

Seasonal change is dramatic and celebrated. Autumn is gold and dry, winter is crisp and short, and spring means cherry blossom weeks of perfect 18°C weather. Buy light, buy layered, and leave room in the case for what you'll find here.

Best time to arrive: Mar–May for sakura, Oct–Nov for koyo.. Whatever season you land in, the kit logic stays the same: a strong outer layer for the weather, a mid-layer you can shed indoors, and footwear built for the streets you will actually walk.
